Return to Skills List

Narrative skills is the ability to understand stories and the ability to tell stories or describe events.   Choose books with repeated phrases, books that tell a cumulative tale or books with a sequence based in the natural world.

What You Can Do To Reinforce This Skill

  • Talk with the children about what they are doing. Ask them “What?” or other open-ended questions.
  • Be patient and allow children time to respond.
  • Tell Stories and draw pictures to go along with the book you tell.
  • Encourage pretend play
  • Let the children help you tell stories using the flannel board, puppets, creative dramatics or props.
